This
man is what local GAA is all about - you could see him putting up flags,
bunting, painting the roads even green and gold such is his love for Aherlow
GAA. When the Glen Boys aren't playing then this the mighty blue and gold
of the Premier County which he wears with pride. This man, some might say, has a mighty appetite and has eaten many a house out of scones, others might say, he’s a fair man to drink a pint or two. This man is known as the one the only - Eddie Moroney, but to the world he is known as Effin Eddie. |

On a very wet and windy day in January 1994, a football
match took place in Littleton, County Tipperary. The game itself was not very
spectacular, but it has entered the annals of the G.A.A. and has been seen
and discussed in the five continents of the world. It has been mentioned in
the national newspapers, it has been discussed on national radio. It has been
shown on national television. Not to mention that it has been shown and enjoyed
in G.A.A. clubs and pubs from New York to Sydney.
I refer, of course, to the Under 21 Football County Final between
Aherlow and Éire Óg Nenagh, and to the famous video commentary
of the match by Eddie Moroney.
Eddie gave a no holds barred account of the match. He told it as he saw it.
There was no inhibition and some of the language used wouldn’t be heard
on a battlefield!!
He explained to Brenda O’Donoghue on radio and to Sean Moncrief on television
that the words just simply flowed out of his mouth, and he was just another
supporter regardless of the microphone. It might have been divine inspiration,
but I don’t think so. It might have been the result of the great send
off given to his father in law, Mickey Foxey O’Brien of Glencussabinnia
the previous day. They said that Mickey was a real character and a great favourite
in the Glen. Living just at the foot of, he could climb to the top of the
mountain up to an advanced age.
Whatever the reason, Eddie’s video came across very naturally and gave
a flavour of what really happens at matches. This is why it had such a universal
appeal. The Bear, Lukey, Dinny, Lionel the Tiger will all be remembered for
a long time.
What’s more amazing is the fact that most of the players in the video
are still playing to this day.
This man is a living legend and a hero in
G.A.A. circles around the globe.
This man is known as Effin Eddie!!
