The Rivers Family

Henry and Ellen Emily Fisher (nee Robbins)

In around 1860 Henry left Farnsfield to work for the Rivers family in London as a farrier.  Around the same time Ellen Robbins was in service as a 'lady in waiting' in Dorset.  Her employer left Dorset to marry a Mr Rivers and took Ellen with her to London.  This is where Henry and Ellen met and resulted in their marriage in 1865 in Islington.

At the moment (Nov 2001), I know nothing about the Rivers family and am keen to find out anything I can.  For Henry to be employed as a farrier by the family, they must have a had a large number of horses and, therefore, must have a been very wealthy.  Other than this, I know nothing about the family.  If you have any thoughts, please let me know by email

I was sent the following email from Caitlin Rivers on 15th August 2002

Hello, Scott.

I ran across your inquiry (below) as I was doing research online. I've been researching my family. My great grandfather, Walter A. Rivers, was born in London probably in the early 1840's. He emigrated to the U.S.,fought in the Civil War, moved west, and died in San Francisco. His parents were Walter H. Rivers and Julia Allen. Walter H. was a surgeon in London, and according to family oral history he was Knighted by Queen Victoria. And that's as much as we know at this point. But knighted or knot, a surgeon in London would likely have had a carriage or two and carriages need horses, of course. And the dates coincide. Am just wondering if you ever made any headway with your interesting inquiry regarding your GGGrandfather, the farrier, and a family named Rivers. Thanks in advance for any info and /or assistance you can offer. As you said, any help would be greatly appreciated.

As I still know nothing more about the rivers, I was unable to help Caitlin but this is one line of enquiry I am keen to progress with.
