1.0 WHO WAS STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN?
I have been a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan for many years. I was assigned to write something for the FAQ about Stevie Ray Vaughan. In order to do that I asked many people this question: Who was Stevie Ray Vaughan? All the answers were like this: He was a bluesman. A guitar hero. A junkie. All that is true. He was a guitar virtuoso. He was an alcoholic and a drug addict who got clean and sober.
After over 20 years of life in the fast lane Stevie Ray cleaned up. He got rehabilitated on both soul and body. Through all his life, all the drugs and all the personal troubles, he only had one goal--to play the guitar. He grew up listening and playing the music of men like Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Eric Clapton and many others. On his final appearance just before he died, he shared the stage with his heroes, friends and fans. After playing the music of his heroes all his life, he got to know them and play music with them. He listened to the best. He learned from the best. He became one of the best.

1.1 THUMBNAIL BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Stevie Ray Vaughan
(1954-1990)
Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in the Oak Cliff Section of Dallas, Texas on October
3, 1954. He was the younger brother of Jimmie Vaughan (born March 20, 1951) and
the son of Jim and Martha Vaughan. Stevie began playing guitar (under the
influence of Jimmie) at the age of eleven, and was soon playing in local teen
combos.
Stevie didn't do well in high school. He would sit at the back of the classroom
tired from playing music all night and just doze off. His grades reflected this
lack of interest. He also probably ditched so much school that his grades surely
suffered.
Stevie dropped out of high school in 1972 and moved to Austin to play music
full-time. Doyle Bramhall, a longtime friend and songwriting partner of
Stevie's, was the first one to tell Stevie that he was a good guitar player. In
the early seventies, Stevie played in a band with Doyle called the
Nightcrawlers. Then, during the mid-seventies, Stevie played with a popular
Austin band called the Cobras.
Stevie formed an ambitious blues-R&B band in 1976 called Triple Threat Revue,
starring himself, Lou Ann Barton, W.C. Clark, Fredde Pharoah & Mike Kindred.
This band evolved into Triple Threat with Stevie, Lou Ann, Chris Layton and
Jackie Newhouse. When Lou Ann left in 1980 to go to the Roomful of Blues, Stevie
stepped forward and renamed the group Double Trouble. On January 2, 1981, Tommy
Shannon replaced Jackie Newhouse on bass.
On December 20, 1979, Stevie married Lenora (Lenny) Baily between sets at the
Rome Inn in Austin. Stevie later wrote a beautiful instrumental song and titled
it "Lenny".
1982 was a banner year for Stevie, who when spotted by David Bowie in Montreaux
Festival was immediately asked to play on Bowie's LET'S DANCE album. He was also
given studio time by Jackson Browne at Browne's Downtown Studio in Los Angeles.
In addition, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble were signed to Epic Records by
John Hammond, a legendary A&R man. This was the beginning of Stevie's
international stardom and constant worldwide touring.
In 1983, TEXAS FLOOD, Stevie and Double Trouble's debut album, was released and
the band appeared on Austin City Limits for the first time. Meanwhile, in
Toronto the El Mocambo video was recorded.
In 1984, COULDN'T STAND THE WEATHER was released.
In 1985, SOUL TO SOUL was released. Stevie also produced Lonnie Mack's comeback
album STRIKE LIKE LIGHTNING, playing on five of the songs.
In 1986, LIVE ALIVE, was released. Later in the year, Stevie entered
rehabilitation to kick his drug problems, after collapsing in Germany. He cut
himself off from enablers (people who would supply him with drugs) and got close
again with his mother, Martha. Stevie remained clean and sober for the rest of
his life.
In 1987 Stevie appeared in a movie as himself. In the movie, BACK TO THE BEACH,
he played a duet with the King of the Surf guitar, Dick Dale. The song they
played was "Pipeline". Also in 1987, Stevie filed for divorce from Lenny.
In 1988, appearing on MTV, Stevie performed an acoustical set. And, his divorce
with Lenny became final.
In 1989, IN STEP was released, Stevie toured with another master guitarist, Jeff
Beck, and appeared on Austin City Limits for the second time. Both Austin City
Limits performances were released years later on single video entitled LIVE FROM
AUSTIN, TEXAS.
In 1990, Stevie toured with Joe Cocker, and finally recorded with brother Jimmie
on FAMILY STYLE.
Stevie Ray Vaughan died on August 27, 1990 in a helicopter crash after leaving a
concert with his brother Jimmie, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and Robert Cray held at
Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. His spirit and music live on.

Cliff, Dallas. In a private ceremony only for friends and relatives, some famous
people were seen in the crowd. Among them were: Jeff Healy, Dr John, ZZ Top,
Ringo Starr, Stevie Wonder, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and Buddy Guy. In
addition, over 3,000 people were outside the chapel to say goodbye to their

1.3 WHERE HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE NOW
--Tommy Shannon --Chris Layton
Stevie's former bandmates Tommy Shannon (bass) and Chris Layton (drums) are now
in a band called "Storyville". They play around Texas and tour the USA
supporting their debut album, "Bluest Eyes". Named "Best New Band" by the Austin
Music Awards in 1995, Storyville also features Texas son, Malford Milligan (also
named Best Male Vocalist). Also in the band are guitarists David Grissom and
David Holt. The band recently signed with Code Blue/Atlantic Records and is set
to release a new CD on the label in early July 1996. The band is also working on
another studio album, that is supposed to be released later this year.
--Reese Wynans
Reese Wynans is the ex-Double Trouble pianist. He is an accomplished session
musician in and around Nashville, Tennessee. Wynans currently lives in
Nashville, Tennessee and performs in two bands: one is "The Bluebloods," which
plays fairly regularly (on Monday nights) at the Bluebird. The second band,
"Reese Wynans and Big Time," is a New Orleans jump-style band that is getting
great reviews in the Nashville/regional area. In his session work Wynans has
performed with stars like Tab Benoit and Leroy Parnell. He went to Memphis
recently and recorded with Storyville for their new CD (which is scheduled for
release on July 2, 1996.)
--Jimmie Vaughan
Stevie's brother is currently touring all over the USA to support his debut
album "Strange Pleasure" and establish himself as a solo artist, after leaving
the well known band The Fabulous Thunderbirds. He regularly shares stage with
Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and other well known musicians.
--Doyle Bramhall
Doyle, a longtime friend and fellow band member from the Nightcrawlers of the
1970's, co-wrote many of his best songs with Stevie, such as: "Dirty Pool,"
"Change It," "Lookin' Out My Window," "Wall of Denial," "Tightrope," "Scratch `n
Sniff," "The House is Rockin'," and "Life By the Drop." Doyle still rocks the
house wherever he goes. His long-awaited debut CD, "Birdnest on the Ground," was
released on Antone's Records in 1993. This CD is a favorite among Texasflood
members and has been discussed in many a thread. Doyle is currently working on a
new CD, which is anxiously anticipated.
--Lou Ann Barton, and W.C. Clark
Two of Stevie's bandmates from his early days, Lou Ann Barton and W.C. Clark,
continue to be mainstays of the flourishing Austin blues circuit. They can still
be found playing the blues around Texas and elsewhere (from east coast to west
coast).
Austin-based vocalist Barton is one of the finest purveyors of raw,
unadulterated roadhouse blues that you'll ever hear. She can still belt 'em out
like nobody's business. Born February 17, 1954, in Fort Worth, she's a veteran
of thousands of dance halls and clubs all over Texas. Barton moved to Austin in
the 1970's and later performed with Stevie (first in the Triple Threat Revue,
then with Double Trouble). Barton has put out several excellent solo albums/CD's
on Austin-based Antone's Records and has continued through the 1990's as one of
the world's premier women blues singers.
Clark continues to be a favorite in the Austin music scene. He was also a member
of the Triple Threat Revue with Stevie (and Lou Ann), and co-wrote one of
Stevie's best known songs, "Cold Shot" (which also appears on W.C.'s long
overdue 1994 national CD debut, "Heart of Gold," for Black Top Records). Clark
currently stays busy by heading up a band called the W.C. Clark Blues Revue.
--Buddy Guy
Buddy was one of Stevie's closest friends. His career is going well, still
touring and playing the blues as he has for the last 35 years.
--Rene Martinez
Rene was Stevie's guitar tech and friend. Rene is now Jimmie Vaughan's guitar
tech, tours with Jimmie and occasionally plays on his own.
--Janna Lapidus
Janna was Stevie's girlfriend. She is now traveling the world as a model. She
models in Australia, USA, Europe and Japan.
--Martha Vaughan
Martha was Stevie's mother. She lives in Dallas and takes care of the charity
funds.

1.4 QUOTES ABOUT SRV FROM THOSE WHO KNEW HIM
The kind of man Stevie Ray was is best described by those who knew him:
Eric Clapton
"I don't think anyone has commanded my respect more, to this day.
The first time I heard Stevie Ray, I thought, "Whoever this is, he is
going to shake the world. I was in my car and I remember thinking,
I have to find out, before the day is over, who that guitar player is.
That doesn't happen to me very often, though I get that way about
listening to music. I mean, about three or four times in my life I've
felt that way...in a car, listening to the radio, where I've stopped the
car, pulled over...listened...and thought, I've got to find out before the
end of the day, not, you know, sooner or later, but I have to know NOW
who that is. And I remember being fascinated by the fact that he never,
ever seemed to be...lost in any way...It was as though he never took a
breather...or took a pause to think where he was gonna go next, it just
flowed out of him. It's going to be a long time before anyone that brilliant
will come along again."
"I didn't get to see or hear Stevie play near often enough, but
every time I did I got chills and knew I was in the presence of
greatness. He seemed to be an open channel and music just flowed
through him. It never seemed to dry up."
Bonnie Raitt
"The most lasting memory of Stevie was his passion. I don't think
there is anyone who tears into a song like the way he did. I
think Stevie Ray was coming from some place so deep and so
beautiful that there's no one you can compare to him."
BB King
"...he was always quick to show gratitude to me and other artists who have been
around. But when it came to playing the blues he earned plenty of respect
himself."
"...the fact is that he affected the way blues will be played and heard
forever."
"I've said that playing the blues is like having to be black twice. Stevie
missed on both counts, but I never noticed."
"He's the blackest white man I've ever seen"![]()
1.5 THE SRV MOVIE PROJECT
E-Mail received from Lee Hopkins, SRV Fan Club,
srvclub@ibm.net
October 31, 1997
There is news at last regarding two of the most asked questions about Stevie Ray
Vaughan: "When will the authorized biography come out", and "Is there going to
be a movie?" As the saying goes, I've got good news and bad news.
On October 29, 1997, it became public information that an agreement has been
reached involving the authorized biography of Stevie, and a film option on that
book. (Please note that I said film option, which does not necessarily mean that
a movie will actually be made.) Dan Forte called me and said that his biography
of Stevie will be finished by the end of October, 1998, and that it will either
be released soon thereafter, or in conjunction with a movie in 1999 or later.
So the good news is the train is rolling and picking up steam; the bad news is
that it probably will not pull into the station until 1999 or later. The
biography will be published by Miramax Books, the film option is held by Miramax
Films. Robert Rodriguez is still slated to direct. There have been no casting
decisions. I said, there have been no casting decisions.
What about Caught in the Crossfire as the basis for a movie, you ask? As you
probably know, Miramax Films has held an option on Joe Nick Patoski and Bill
Crawford's book for about two years. That option expires in February, 1998. It
now appears to be clear that a movie, if any, will be drawn from the authorized
biography by Dan Forte, rather than from the CITC book. I am sure this is no
criticism of CITC, but merely a result of the fact that Mr. Forte will have
access to the Vaughan family and other important persons who were not available
to Patoski and Crawford.
Hopefully, by this time next year, there will be a much more complete schedule
in place as to release of the biography and movie.![]()
1.6 REVIEW OF COMMERCIAL BOOKS ABOUT SRV

DESCRIPTION
This "unauthorized" biography attempts to cover SRV's life in great detail and
to explain the times and settings that SRV lived through. The book is organized
in chronological chapters. It includes an index, a discography, and a
collector's tape-ography (a kind term for an SRV bootleg catalog). The authors'
notes section has a wealth of information regarding reference books and articles
used in constructing this biography.
It is rumored that Miramar has bought the rights to this book to use in a movie
of SRV's life. In a posting to Texasflood, Jimmie was quoted as saying that some
events described in this book are just plain wrong, and he wants them corrected
in the movie.

1.6.2 TITLE: STEVIE RAY: SOUL TO SOUL
Author: Keri Leigh
ISBN: 0-87833-838-1 (paper)
Published: ??? 1993, 185 pages
Retail Price: $18.95
DESCRIPTION
This book claims to tell the story the way Stevie Ray wanted it told. In the
preface the author states that she was a friend and business associate of SRV's
for years and that she was chosen to write a biography in May 1990. She
conducted interviews and discussed SRV's vision of a biography via telephone
during the last three months of his life. After SRV's tragic death, Keri states
that she could not bring herself to look at her research for six months and it
wasn't until after a lot of prodding by friends, acquaintances, and even total
strangers that she began working on the project again in earnest.
The result is a picture-packed tribute that covers most of the same material
that is found in CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE although at times with less detail. It
does have several personal stories and recollections not found in CITC.
Again noticeably absent from the list of interviewees for this biography: Jimmie
and Martha Vaughan, Double Trouble, Janna Lapidus, and Lenny Vaughan Cobb.
This book also contains a bibliography, a collector's guide to SRV's music and
videos, and an index.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Keri Leigh has been a journalist since the age of 17 and has penned numerous
articles on rock stars and blues artists. Her writings regularly appear in Blues
Access magazine. She spends most of her time on the road fronting her own blues
band the Blue Devils. She was nominated for a Handy award in 1996.![]()
1.6.3 RECOMMENDATIONS
Both books are required reading for hardcore SRV fans. Even though duplicate
sections between each book occur, there are enough unique stories and
recollections from each to warrant reading both.
SOUL TO SOUL (STS) is probably worth the price for its photos alone. By
contrast, CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE (CITC) is the more detailed of the two (at
times excruciatingly so).
