7.1 PREVIOUS AND UPCOMING TRIBUTES, BENEFITS, AND MEMORIALS
When news of Stevie Ray Vaughan's death reached his fans, spontaneous
candlelight vigils and gatherings occured all around the country, with perhaps
the largest of these in Austin, Texas. Since that time, several tributes have
occurred.
Probably the first of these was an Austin City Limits tribute which featured
Buddy Guy, Robert Cray. This show featured Double Trouble as the backing band.
Another Austin City Limits segment broadcast with Stevie Ray's 1989 performance
featured W.C. Clark, who was a member of the "Triple Threat Revue" with Stevie.
This broadcast included a previously unaired song ("Tightrope") from Stevie's
1989 recording for ACL, and a jam with Stevie Ray, Jimmie Vaughan and W.C.
Clark.
Jimmie Vaughan paid tribute to his brother during his performance of "Six
Strings Down" on the 1995 Austin City Limits Broadcast he recorded with his
Tilt-a-Whirl band.
On May 11, 1995, a performance was recorded before an audience of 400 in a
television studio. This performance was intended as the ultimate tribute to
Stevie's memory. It featured every player who shared the stage with Stevie the
night of his final performance at Alpine Valley, WI., as well as B.B. King, and
Stevie's longtime friends, Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John, and Art Neville. This show
was recorded with the intention that it would be broadcast, probably on Austin
City Limits. It was released as a commercial video and CD in August of 1996.
This performance had two segments. The first portion featured Double Trouble as
the backing band, supplemented by Denny Freeman. This is the set list from this
portion of the concert (the featured artist is listed with each song):
Jimmie Lee Vaughan: Texas Flood
Bonnie Raitt: Pride and Joy
Robert Cray: Lovestruck Baby
Dr. John: Cold Shot
Buddy Guy: Mary had a little lamb
Eric Clapton: Empty Arms
The second half of the performance featured Jimmie Vaughan's Tilt-a-Whirl Band
and the backing band. This band included drummer George Rains and organist Bill
Willis. Tommy Shannon was the bassist for the second portion of the show as
well. This is the set list from this portion of the concert:
B.B.King & Jimmie Vaughan: Telephone Song
Robert Cray and Bonnie Raitt: Hard to Be
Eric Clapton: Ain't gone n' give up on Love
Buddy Guy: Long, Long way from Home
Art Neville: Life Without You
Jimmie Vaughan (and guests): Six Strings Down
Jimmie Vaughan's Tilt-a-Whirl Band: Tick Tock (Following this
song, an unrehearsed jam occured which ended with B.B. King
leading the group into "When the Saints Go Marching In.")
While SRV fans everywhere anxiously awaited the release of this tribute, another
tribute show is also circulating among SRV collectors. On 5/12/95 a performance
took place at the Austin Music Hall with Jimmie Vaughan's Tilt-a-Whirl band.
This memorial concert featured Rene Martinez (Stevie's guitar tech), Buddy Guy,
Eric Clapton, and Robert Cray. The performance consists mainly of blues
standards and the artists generally did not cover the same songs they recorded
the day before. This is a hot show worth seeking out.
On February 27, 1996, the First Annual Pride and Joy All-Star Jam--a Stevie Ray
Vaughan Memorial Scholarship Fund Benefit--took place at Stevie Ray's Blues Bar
in Louisville, KY. The performers were:
Smokey Wilson, Foree "Guitar" Wells, Jimmy Brown (bass), Marvin Maxwell (drums)
Jim Rosen (harmonica), Bob Ramsey (keyboards) and Rod Wurtele (keyboards).
Opening acts for the above All-Star Jam were:
The Shannon Lawson Blues Band
The Reverend Billy Rose
Tim Arnold, Slide Guitar
U.S. 27
One of Stevie Ray's amp tech's, Steve Wilson, was sound engineer for the event.
The plan is for this to be an annual event.
More memorial concerts may occur. The Vaughan Family has expressed their desire
that Stevie Ray memorials not be held on the date of his death, but rather on
his birthday (October 3) so that his life may be celebrated rather than his
passing mourned.

7.3.1 THE STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial Scholarship Fund, coordinated by the Communities
Foundation of Texas, and Mrs. Martha Vaughan, wascreated in Stevie's memory to
assist music students pursue their educational dreams. This award is given to
students in the 8th grade at the end of the school year. Scholarships are given
to students who are recommended by their teachers who have demonstrated a strong
interest and ability in music and have a desire to attend a college or
university. Candidates for scholarships must have good grades, a good school
attendance record and be financially needy.
The scholarship will be awarded when the student graduates from high school and
enrolls in a two or four year college or university. This scholarship, being a
dropout prevention incentive, is used to encourage students to stay in high
school and have a concern for their studies. In the meantime, the award is

Fund distributes 25 percent of the monies to the Dallas Area Parkinsonian
