The Dispossessed

In The Dispossessed, Ursula LeGuin explores the concepts of Utopia and the human senses of justice and rightness. The story begins on the moon Anarres, the utopian society of a group of anarchists who believe that human relations and the human soul are best when unfettered by laws or ownership. As we see though the eyes of Shevek, an iconoclastic physicist, utopia has gotten lost. In many ways, this solitary man tries many things to heal the system from within, ultimately going to Urras, the planet his people left generations ago. We see his moral challenges, his acclimatization to a new and wholly different society, and his love for his people.

This book explores the hypocrisies of societies and of people. Shevek is cast as the loving outsider - a man who dearly loves humanity, but is puzzled by its contradictions and inconsistencies. His adventures, both of mind and body are fascinating for their questing and rending natures.
