Yoga

Yoga can be practiced for many different reasons. Some use yoga as an exercise tool. Others perform yoga as a meditation ritual or as a philosophy. I find it very soothing and invigorating. The benefits are numerous. It is an excellent low impact exercise for improving flexibility and light muscle toning. In addition, it is an excellent way to relax, reduce stress, and focus your mind. One of the most wondeful things about yoga is that it is appropriate for nearly everyone. Pregnant women, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses or disabilities can enjoy yoga. Yoga is very adaptable to the needs and abilities of the individual.

In fact, Yoga is often combined with Ayurveda, a holistic system of healing from India which emphasisizes the mind-body connection. It uses a constitutional model of doshas (somewhat akin to the familiar Four Humors model of Hippocrates ).

A good place to learn basic information about yoga is at the American Yoga Association web site. Another is at the Yoga Journal website. To learn about the poses or asanas of yoga, follow this link. You can also visit Santosha ashram for more information and step-by-step instructions on asanas. There are also a variety of books on yoga that are commonly available.
